Challenge
As California Education Partners worked closely with districts and schools, they recognized the importance of addressing English language development (ELD) across their efforts. The group wanted to include expertise in ELD and English learners (ELs) in early childhood education, mathematics, and general instructional practices.
Process:
Understanding Language helped California Education Partners embed curriculum enhancement practices and leadership development that supported ELs across grades and content areas. The focus was on the simultaneous development of language and content with an emphasis on building networks of practice across districts and district team roles. UL provided in-person and remote professional development to local leaders and educators that included learning of ELD/EL-specific strategies, collecting information on implementation, and examining possibilities for improvement and scaling.
Result:
Understanding Language assisted California Education Partners in embedding curriculum enhancement practices and leadership development that supported ELs across grades and content areas.
